Every year my husband, my kids, and I all become obsessed about our break-in-the-fittest little things. I want to share them with you, from the moment I see them, but I don’t know what they mean. As far as I can tell, they’re not some kind of “fantastic” thing to be about, but they don’t come in every single time.
I’m sure some of you have heard of the term “breakin-the-fittest” but I thought I’d just take the time to lay it out for you.
One of the benefits of being an endurance athlete is knowing when to stop, when to stay, and when to let it go. In this case, it was time to stop. On this particular night, my husband, kids, and I were all in the gym lifting weights when my son noticed a red light on the wall. He was on the floor in the middle of the room, and my daughter was next to him.
It was red because it was the only light in the gym that didn’t have one of those weird blue and red stripes. It was the same light that, for some reason, lit the entire room, including the doorway to the gym. My son just stared at it for a few seconds and then walked over to the doorway to see what it was. I knew that red would be the last light he saw and I was right, too.
This is a strange story, but the only reason I can think of for not having a full-on red light was because it was the only way to turn the entire room into one red light. I thought that was the only way to get it because it would make the whole gym look a little more dim than it actually was. It turned out that this had been the light, though.
It was just another night at the gym for Bartlett, who had been doing cardio and then doing some squats and then some leg-presses, then doing some weights, then some more cardio, then then squats, and then some more cardio.
A barbell workout is a good way to build muscle mass and strength and it’s usually a good way to make some time for some crossfit workouts. So this was a full-on red light. I was doing the barbell (and the barbell bench press) so I could burn off some calories.
The barbell is a great bar to use, but you need to set up the proper weight and get a lot of reps to get a good burn. It is also one of the only weights you can use that is a bit light for me to grip and take a deep breath at the top.

My biggest problem with barbells is when doing a back squat. The barbell’s weight is very light and you need to do a lot of reps without using your arms to brace yourself. Not as bad as if you were doing a pull-up, but still a little inconvenient. Crossfit, however, offers many other bars that can be used for barbell exercises (ex. kettlebells, squat racks, etc.
